1-Adamantanamine, also known as Amantadine or 1-Aminoadamantane or 1-Adamantylamine (CAS: 768-94-5) acts as a catalyst in enantioselective strecker reaction of phosphinoyl imines. It is also useful for the synthesis of adamantane derivatives, i.e. Amantadine Hydrochloride. 1-Adamantanamine is a member of the class of adamantanes that is used in the pharmaceutical industry as antiviral and an antiparkinsonian drug. Treatment of Parkinsonism with a combination of Levodopa, anticholinergic drugs, and amantadine gives better results than using any of these drugs individually. It is a weak antagonist of NMDA glutamate receptor, which can increase the release of dopamine and block the reuptake of dopamine. The drug may also promote the release of norepinephrine from nerve endings in the brain. It can treat dyskinesia of Parkinson's disease and improve dyskinesia after long-term dopaminergic treatment.
