2-Ethylhexyl Salicylate (CAS: 118-60-5), (also known as Octyl Salicylate, Octisalate), is an organic compound used as an ingredient in sunscreens and cosmetics to absorb the full range of UVB rays from the sun. It is an oil soluble and water Insoluble UV B absorber which is being used for a long time, even before PABA and provides effective protection in the range of 290-315 nm. Salicylates are weak UV B absorber and generally used in combination with other UV to boost the SPF. Octisalate serves as an inhibitor against UV degradation of emulsions, polymer and dyestuff. 2-Ethylhexyl Salicylate is an FDA-approved UV B sunscreen chemical, it absorbs within the entire uVB range. It has an approved usage level of 3 to 5 percent in both the united States and the european union, and is a good solubilizer for benzophenone-3. In suntan lotions, it is used as a preservative and anti-microbial. It is also synthetically manufactured. It is considered a non-comedogenic raw material.
